CAREER PORTFOLIO

THANKS for visiting my website. It provides a brief summary of over fifteen years of my experience in technology and business development. My goal for your visit is not just to show you projects that I have completed, but also to convey an understanding of how I face new challenges and achieve goals. The site highlights examples of my work in engineering, management, sales and marketing.

What I Make

I create customer-focused web projects that are easy to use and communicate clearly. My key professional activities are making:

Websites

I develop websites to match my clients' target markets. I start by reviewing my clients' goals and reviewing their market situation. I then assist them in developing a communications plan and start developing conceptual mockups of their sites before starting any coding. The coding process is iterative in order to ensure that clients have time to review each project milestone.

Harvest Meats

One of my clients is Harvest Meats. They are a national food supplier with hundreds of products available in most major supermarkets across Canada. I developed a complete web presence for them to reflect their traditional values and high standards. I produced their website highlighting gourmet preparations of their foods with recipes that I tested across major Canadian ethnicities. The recipes were also licensed to Loblaws Supermarkets for promotional use. I also developed an animated video to tell the history behind Harvest's family business and traditional values.

Videos

I manage InterFusion.ca where we produce short, but powerful, web movies. We hand-craft each movie using the perfect blend of information, entertainment, and persuasion in order to match specific target markets.

Web Apps

I'm a full-stack developer using open-source software standards such as HTML5, CSS3, Javascript, jQuery, jQuery Mobile and Bootstrap. I develop in MeteorJS due to its relatively rapid development cycle and NodeJS due to its excellent server performance.

NodeJS Mobile Web Application

I recently developed a NodeJS application that enhances a leading customer support system called TeamSupport. My application provides customer service agents with key workflows that they can while they are away from their desktop computers. It also reduces the complexity of TeamSupport's user interface, making it much easier for new employees to become productive as quickly as possible.

To provide maximum compatibility with mobile phones, the application uses jQuery Mobile on the client-side. On the server-side, the application is based on NodeJS and connects to a RESTful API managed by TeamSupport. The NodeJS modules that I used include Express, Async, EJS templating, Passport, Nodemailer, among others. From a DevOps perspective, the application uses Heroku, Logentries, Nodetime, NewRelic, MemWatch and Postmark webhooks.

MeteorJS - FountCouver

FountCouver is an a meteor application that I developed based on an initial prototype that I built with Jenny Lian at a Meteor hack-a-thon. The goal was to use data from the City of Vancouver's Open-source repository to plot the locations of water fountains.

I implemented a NodeJS FTP client in the FountCouver Meteor server.

The main challenge was that the data was only available by FTP and I was surprised to discover that there was no FTP client-emulation package available yet within the Meteor eco-system. Consequently, we couldn't get very far during the short hack-a-thon and were only able to load test data from a static file.

Afterwards, I continued with the project on my own and wrapped the NodeJS FTP-client package called jsFTP into the Meteor server code. I also wrote code to handle streamed data and plot it as it arrived asynchronously (by DDP) in the browser's Meteor collection. I committed my code and documentation to open-source in my github repository so that other Meteor programmers could learn how use FTP in a Meteor environment.

My Background

Management Experience

At numerous companies including ADC Mobile Systems, Cardinal Health, and Moneris Solutions, I managed multi-million dollar business areas. One of my favourite roles was as Director at ADC where I held P&L responsibility for a business unit that provided systems and services for mobile phone infrastructure. The clients were national wireless operators and vendors including AT&T and Lucent as well as international operators. I was responsible for planning and guiding new initiatives in direct and indirect sales channels, marketing, contracts, engineering, product management, project management, and operations.

The team that I managed at ADC Mobile Systems

The solutions provided by my team of 24 employees involved design, integration, and support of RF, datacom, telecom, digital hardware, and software. We also developed business cases to assist end-customers in justifying their purchases.

Proposal Development
  • Coordinated and developed large proposals to Fortune 500 client prospects and investment groups, resulting in subsequent sales

Sales Experience

At various companies I held a number of sales roles including direct sales, indirect sales, and sales management. I am just as comfortable developing new sales as working with existing customers. The quotas for my team have exceeded $10M and were met. Major customers included:

* The logos above are owned by their respective companies.

One of my biggest accomplishments was during my first job in sales where I increased annual sales by 900% for a DS1 telecom network solution that profiled voice and data usage of mobile phone users. In that challenge, I was the only sales person. In later companies, I was responsible for hiring employees who became 'star' sales producers.

Engineering Experience

I spent a considerable amount of my early career doing engineering and later moved into management. In 2011 I returned to my enjoyment of hands-on technical work and have been writing web-related software since then. Samples of my work from both these periods are found in the next section as well as the section titled Web App Samples.

Wireless Infrastructure Engineering (Management)

Shown below is an overview of the system components that my team would install on Cellular Operators' networks in order to add wireless Internet capabilities to voice networks. This CDPD technology was used by many Cellular Operators, including our major customer AT&T.

I was responsible for a number of areas in the development of this radio system. I did the physical engineering and production-engineering of the radio enclosure shown below.

Additionally, I wrote PC-based software that:

The following overview shows the components (shaded) of an RF protection system which I designed to protect TV transmitters from self-destructing. Conditions that could cause these failures include ice or wind damage to the antenna or mast. The major design criterion was to turn off the amplifier's input when VSWR conditions threatened output transistor stages.
